Year 5 (Adriatic)

The Year 5 class is called Adriatic. As throughout the school, children are from both the local area and from a variety of countries and bring a wealth of languages and different cultural experiences to the classroom. In Year 5, we encourage further independence and all of the children take on roles of responsibility as playleaders, organising games at playtimes. Adriatic class have a representative in the School Council and in the Rights Respecting Schools steering committee.

We have a full and exciting curriculum with a strong international dimension. We spend at least two afternoons a week on our current topic which is cross-curricular but with a particular focus on either history, geography, art or science. The topic changes each half-term. Year 5 work together with year 6 for topic work on a two year rolling curriculum.

Children benefit from a wide range of educational trips, workshops and visits. Recent trips include the Duxford Imperial War Museum, the American Cemetery, The Green Britain Centre, Cambridge Science Centre and an all day drama based Maya workshop. Forthcoming trips and visits include a visit from our local MP and a visit to the Houses of Parliament. As some of the older children in the school, many of Adriatic class children choose to take part in extra drama opportunities such as the Shakespeare Festival which CIS Juniors have taken part in for the last two years.

Literacy lessons take place 4-5 times a week and are often but not always linked to our topic learning. Children learn about the language used for different styles of writing. Genres explored in year 5 are poetry, narrative/creative writing, explanation texts, recounts and persuasive writing. Children have targeted spelling lessons twice a week and learn grammar and punctuation both discretely and as an integral part of the reading and writing learning processes.

Maths lessons take place five days a week and continue to build on previous knowledge of arithmetic, calculations, fractions, statistics, measurement and space and shape whilst stretching and extending their understanding and use of more complex concepts and how to apply their skills and knowledge.

Children enjoy Spanish lessons with a native speaker twice a week and some also choose to study French or Mandarin. They also take part in whole school language based activities such as International Languages day, language assemblies and termly whole school language competitions. All children also take part in the school’s valuable Mother Tongue programme.

Sport is taught twice a week by specialised teachers and we have also begun to do a short daily run or skip to increase fitness levels and improve concentration. Children also take part in sports fixtures and external sports events in which they have done exceedingly well this year.

Once a week there is a music lesson with a qualified music teacher where Adriatic sing, rehearse with their own musical instruments and collaborate on original compositions. The children also participate in the Junior School Choir.

The Year 5 teacher is Tamsin Zalucki. She is always happy to show you Adriatic class in action and let you experience the happy and engaged atmosphere of the classroom for yourself. Please contact our Admissions Department on 01223 778290 if you would like to arrange a visit.
