The Year 3 class is called Arafura. As throughout the school, children are from both the local area and from a variety of countries and bring a wealth of languages and different cultural experiences to the classroom. Year 3 is the transition from Infants to Juniors and as the year progresses children are supported to take on more resonsibilities and become more independent. Arafura class have a representative in the School Council and on the Rights Respecting Schools steering committee.
We have a full and exciting curriculum with a strong international dimension. Each half term we have a new cross curricular topic with a particular focus on either history, geography, art or science. Year 3 work together with Year 4 for topic work on a two year rolling curriculum. There are many opportunities for collaborative group work and for children to extend their learning, pursuing their own interests and talents and choosing their own methods of presentation.
Children benefit from a wide range of educational trips, workshops and visits. Recent trips include the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge Mosque, Botanical Gardens and we have taken part in a Walking Tour of Cambridge. We have also been lucky enough to have fantastic visitors into school such as HackLab and Jungle Jo. Our residential trip with Year 4 to Grafham Water Centre is an absolute highlight of each year. The children stay away for two nights and participate in activities such as sailing, canoeing, archery, high ropes, bush craft and orienteering.
Literacy lessons take place daily and are often but not always linked to our topic learning. Children learn about the language and features used for different styles of writing. Genres explored in Year 3 include poetry, narrative writing, letter writing, recounts and report writing. Children have targeted spelling lessons twice a week and learn grammar and punctuation both discretely and as an integral part of the reading and writing learning processes.
Maths lessons take place five days a week and continue to build on previous knowledge of arithmetic, calculations, fractions, data, measurement and space and shape whilst stretching and extending their understanding and use of more complex concepts and how to apply their skills and knowledge to problem solving.
Children enjoy Spanish lessons with a native speaker twice a week and some also choose to study French or Mandarin as optional clubs. They also take part in whole school language based activities such as International Languages day, language assemblies and termly whole school language competitions. All children also take part in the school’s valuable Mother Tongue programme.
Sport also takes place twice weekly. Once a week there is a music lesson with a qualified music teacher where Arafura class sing, rehearse with their own musical instruments and collaborate on original compositions. The children also participate in the Junior School Choir every Friday.
The Year 3 teacher is Karen Ebenezer. She is always happy to show you Arafura class in action and let you experience the happy and engaged atmosphere of the classroom for yourself. Please contact our Admissions Department on 01223 778290 if you would like to arrange a visit.
