Students in Years 7,8 and 9 attend weekly music lessons where they can learn to play a variety of styles on classroom instruments such as keyboards and guitars, sing, and play their own instruments. There are opportunities to perform, compose, and to explore theoretical and cultural aspects of music across a wide range of topics, as well as to read notation. Pupils are supported to progress whatever their starting point – from completely new to highly proficient.
Students in Year 7 and 8 can additionally opt for a weekly double lesson of music as an elective for a term, focusing on ensemble performing skills.
Students reaching the required level on their instrument (Grade 4 ABRSM or equivalent standard) can opt to study Edexcel Music GCSE in Years 10 and 11.
All singers and instrumentalists are encouraged to participate in our busy extra-curricular programme, which includes Year 7/8 Choir, Senior Choir, Senior Band and Chamber Group. Regular concerts and assemblies offer a platform for these groups, and other soloists and ensembles, to show off their talents. Other highlights of the music calendar include the House Music Competition and our annual trip to a West End musical.
